After multiple moves over the weekend, the Patriots have reportedly signed Tight End Jonnu Smith to a 4 Year $50M deal.
Smith, 25, has played a total of 60 games in his NFL career. The ex-Titan has caught passes mainly from Marcus Mariota and Ryan Tannehill through his career, and has tallied 1,302 yards in his career, averaging 21.7 yards per game in his career. The 6-3 248 pound tight end has 16 touchdowns in his career. Smith is a 2017 3rd Round Pick out of Florida International University.
Smith caught 41 passes this year and had 448 yards. He started 14 games, and appeared in 15.
Smith’s deal is a large chunk of money, as his deal is worth $50M across the next four years, which only about $31M is guaranteed. His deal makes him the third highest paid TE in the NFL behind George Kittle and Travis Kelce.
This comes after the Patriots got nothing out of the TE position the last two years, as they ranked 32nd in the NFL in TE production, dead last in the league. Tight ends such as Dalton Keene, Devin Asiasi, and Matt LaCosse just to name a few have been featured the past two years after Gronk left.
Smith has been said to be a great redzone option, very versatile as he can even play RB, and has the ability to make plays downfield.
