Red Sox Top Pitching Prospect Bryan Mata Underwent Tommy John Surgery Tuesday

The Red Sox announced Wednesday that Bryan Mata underwent Tommy John Surgery Tuesday.

Mata, 21, slightly tore his UCL in Spring Training. Mata is the top pitching prospect in the Red Sox organization, and is ranked as the fourth overall prospect in the Red Sox organization.

Bryan Mata posted a 3.43 ERA in 21 starts with time split between High-A Salem and Double-A Portland in 2019. In 2020, at the Alternate Training Site in Pawtucket, he was averaging around 96-98 MPH on his fastball.

The Red Sox had Mata start a throwing program in early April, but was shut down sometime in the past week.

The right-hander’s 5 pitch arsenal consists of the four-seam and two-seam fastball, a slider, curveball and changeup. With the two-seam fastball and the slider being his two main pitches.

Mata posted on his twitter saying “Grateful.”
