Back in February, Quarterback Mac Jones was featured on our “Prototypical Patriots” article. Here’s what was said previously:
“Unless New England moves up the draft board, Jones will be the best quarterback for the Patriots in this year’s draft. A lot of people say it’s a reach, but if he’s your guy, you take him. He’s accurate in the intermediate routes, gets the ball out quick, understands pressure in the pocket, and thrives in rhythm. He spreads the ball around, allowing receivers to make plays after the catch.”
All reports indicated that San Francisco will take Mac Jones at #3. However, the Patriots did not have to move up in the draft to get their guy. Regarded by many as one of the most accurate and intelligent Quarterbacks in this class, Mac Jones is now a Patriot. Cam Newton will get his chance to resurrect his career in Foxboro, but the future is here for New England.
Jones could not be entering a better situation. A similar football atmosphere, strong offensive line, versatile running game, and offensive weapons to spread the football around.
With day two impending, here are some options for the Patriots.
Trade down at No. 46:
The Patriots currently hold a 50 pick gap between their 2nd and 3rd round picks. Christian Barmore, Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah, and Trevon Moehrig are all surprisingly still on the board. Because of this, value will continue to be available during the gap that New England will be waiting. Bill Belichick will not be fond of that which may lead to the team striking a deal.
Potential trade down options:
WR: Amari Rodgers, D’Wayne Eskridge, Amon Ra-St Brown, Tylan Wallace
RB: Michael Carter, Demetric Felton, Kenneth Gainwell
T: Liam Eichenberg, Brady Christensen
LB: Baron Browning
DB: Ar’Darius Washington, Jamar Johnson, Richie Grant, Kelvin Joseph, Tre Brown
46 or higher:
If New England decides to stay put or even move up to take a 1st round talent here’s who they could be eyeing.
WR: Elijah Moore, Rondale Moore, Marshall Jr, Dyami Brown
LB: Jabril Cox, Nick Bolton, Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah
DL: Christian Barmore, Azeez Ojulari, Joseph Ossai, Ronnie Perkins
DB: Tyson Campbell, Jevon Holland, Andre Cisco, Elijah Molden
OL: Samuel Cosmi, Dillon Radunz, Walker Little
