The Patriots fourth round selection, Rhamondre Stevenson, created a post draft thought regarding Sony Michel.
The Patriots declined Michel’s fifth year option today, after picking up Isaiah Wynn’s option.
Are his Foxboro days numbered? It very well could be after New England decided to not pick up Michel’s fifth year option. Stevenson fits a similar mold to Michel, a north-south runner with more power than speed. While Michel proved to be vital to the Patriots 2019 Super Bowl run, he has battled injuries and depth competition since.
With the emergence of Damien Harris and the stability of James White, it’s fair to wonder where that leaves Michel. Perhaps the Patriots decide to ride this out in 2021 and redshirt Stevenson; a strategy the team often uses with first year running backs. Or the team will cut bait with Michel, either through trade or by releasing him.
Michel is under contract though ’21, but his contract will end after the season is over.
The Patriots currently roster six running backs, a number likely to change come summer time. Most likely training camp will determine Michel’s future, but it is not looking favorable.
