Red Sox Notebook: Kike Hernandez Goes to 10-Day IL, Michael Chavis Called Up; Minor League Updates & More

Kike Hernandez doubled into right field to lead off the bottom half of the first for the Red Sox Thursday, but was taken out of the game right after as he was experiencing some hamstring tightness.

Franchy Cordero took his spot, and had a slump ending day going 3-for-5.

Hernandez was moved to the 10-Day IL shortly after, which recalled Michael Chavis up to the majors. He’ll lead off and play second base Saturday against the Orioles after missing the roster cut in spring.

“He did a good job in spring training early on,” Red Sox manager Alex Cora said. “I do believe toward the end because of the competition, he started chasing hits and he got out of his approach.”

Chavis hit seven homers in spring training. Second on the Red Sox, only behind Bobby Dalbec who hit eight.

“We know what he can do. I saw it in ‘19,” Cora said. “Obviously the league caught up with him.”

Chavis spent one day on the active roster this season, but did not play. He was activated when JD Martinez was experiencing flu like symptoms back in April, in the midst of the nine game win streak.

Red Sox Minor League Updates:

Top prospects Duran and Downs combine for 6-for-8 night in Woo Sox first win in franchise history:

The Worcester Red Sox picked up their first win in franchise history Friday night, defeating the Buffalo Bisons 4-2.

26-year old Woo Sox starter Stephen Gonsalves went 5.1 innings, allowing just two hits off one run in the victory.

Red Sox top prospects OF Jarren Duran and 2B/SS Jeter Downs both had big nights. Duran went 3-for-4, and Downs went 2-for-4 after both of them struggled out of the gates of the season.

UTIL Danny Santana raking in Greenville on rehab assignment:

The Red Sox Low-A team, the Greenville Drive, are 0-3 to start the year despite Danny Santana being 4-for-7 to start the year.

Santana, 30, is on a rehab assignment after being hospitalized with a right foot infection. He had a shot at making the roster, before being hospitalized late in spring training.
