Before Thursday night’s contest between the Astros and Red Sox, Boston has called up reliever Brandon Brennan.
To make room for Brennan, they have sent down the struggling Phillips Valdez.
Brennan was signed early in the season to a minor-league deal, and in eight and a third innings this season with the WooSox, the Red Sox Triple-A squad, he’s struck out 11 and has posted an ERA of 2.16.
The move wasn’t exactly because Valdez is struggling, but more because of the fact that Valdez has tossed three innings over the past two days, the Red Sox being in need of arms.
Valdez, 29, was the Red Sox top reliever last season, if not the top pitcher on the 2020 Red Sox posting a 3.26 ERA. Brennan, also 29, through 54.2 innings across 2019 and 2020 with the Mariners (7.1 in 2020) has posted a 4.45 ERA.
