The Red Sox took a 6-5 win over the Blue Jays after Alex Verdugo’s walk-off double that drove in pinch-runner Danny Santana in the ninth to give the BoSox the win.
Garrett Richards was unable to get out of the sixth inning as he was lucky to surrender just four runs. He got out of the first inning lucky to allow just a run, as he escaped the bases-loaded jam with a strikeout. He allowed two more runs in the second inning, and after being taken out in the sixth with a runner responsible to his name, Hirokazu Sawamura came in and let up a towering blast to Vladimir Guerrero Jr., to put the score at 5-1.
He was rocked around for a total of 11 hits and finished his night allowing four runs through 5 1/3 innings. He walked two and struck out just three.
Through the first five innings, the Red Sox’ only source of offense was a solo big fly to straightaway center field off the bat of Bobby Dalbec in the bottom of the third inning. But in the sixth inning, that would change.
With two outs, Hunter Renfroe drove in Alex Verdugo who doubled to lead off with a single. Christian Vazquez would follow that up the very next at-bat with a single of his own to knock Blue Jays starter Ross Stripling out of the ballgame.
With two on and two out, Chatwood beamed Christian Arroyo to load the bases. Chatwood was again unable to find the zone, and walked Marwin Gonzalez to drive in the third before throwing a wild pitch to bring home Vazquez for the fourth run. Chatwood beamed another batter, this time Bobby Dalbec to load the bases again. But after Tim Mayza replaced Tyler Chatwood, Kike Hernandez was unable to capitalize on the opportunity, leaving the score at 5-4 heading into the seventh.
After a shutdown inning from Josh Taylor in the seventh, Garrett Whitlock followed up with two scoreless innings in the eighth and ninth, which left the bottom of the ninth at a 5-5 score.
Kike Hernandez reached base to lead off the inning on a throwing error by shortstop Bo Bichette, and the very next at-bat Alex Verdugo answered the bell with a double off the green monster to bring home pinch-runner Danny Santana.
The Sox tally their 39th win of the season, and will take on the Blue Jays again on Saturday at 4:10 PM EST.
