Carles Gil and Matt Turner Named MLS Player of the Week Consecutively

The Revs are on fire, and the league is taking notice. Matt Turner was named player of the week for his stellar seven save performance against NYCFC on Saturday. Carles Gil received the award for his hat trick of assists in a win versus the New York Red Bulls on Wednesday.

Goalkeepers don’t often take home player of the week honors, though they found themselves taking two in a row in Week 7 and 8. LA Galaxy’s Jonathan Bond grabbed it for his 12 saves and a clean sheet against the San Jose Earthquakes. Turner’s performance was just as impressive.

Turner started off the night with a saved penalty low to his right, shot by Taty Castellanos. Minutes later when Jon Bell watched a ball over his head, he robbed Castellanos again with one hand within 10 yards. Turner picked up various other saves down the stretch, including a double save near the end of the match. Perhaps the most photogenic of all was Maxi Moralez’s stoppage time volley, which curled towards the far post, and was yet again denied by Matt Turner. He was the sole reason the Revs were able to leave New York with all three points.

Carles Gil’s POTW nod was a bit more controversial, many believing that Sporting Kansas City’s Daniel Salloi was robbed with his two goals and one assist performance. Nevertheless, Gil showed yet again why he’s the clear MVP favorite. Carles’ one time passing and general vision were the catalyst for all three goals in a 3-2 victory over the Red Bulls.

While it’s a great start, there’s still plenty of season left to play. The Revolution have completed 10 out of 34 games, leaving still 24 games left to play. Their next match lies late on Sunday night, for their furthest road trip of the year. They’ll visit FC Dallas at 9:00 PM EST, one of two games against Western Conference opponents this season.
