The Red Sox have selected left-handed bat Marcelo Mayer with the fourth overall pick in the 2021 MLB draft.
Mayer was picked after Henry Davis (first), Jack Leiter (second), and Jackson Jobe (third) was picked. Mayer was not likely to be passed on by three teams, as he was first on many mock drafts. But the Tigers made a surprise pick choosing Jobe over Mayer and other prospects.
The Californian shortstop has an all-around bat to go along with his elite defense. He is arguably the top prospect in the draft, and the 18-year-old will be developed to his full potential with All-Star shortstop Xander Bogaerts as the current shortstop of the club.
