Coming off a dominant win against Inter Miami CF, they will face MLS’ other CF team in Montreal. The last time these two teams met, the Revs scored a 95th minute winner through Gustavo Bou to advance to the playoffs.
This time around, Montreal has completely new branding, and is a whole different team. Mason Toye and Djordje Mihailovic have revitalized this team, but they remain inconsistent. Montreal is always a good matchup for New England, but we’ll see if that trend continues against Wilfried Nancy’s revamp.
DEF: MAFLA, FARRELL, BELL, BYE
MID: POLSTER, KAPTOUM, TRAUSTASON, GIL
FWD: BOU, BUKSA
LINEUP NOTES: The same deal for today, Turner, Kessler, and Buchanan remain out at the Gold Cup. Both teams play tonight during or after the Revs. Tajon could potentially return soon as they have a tough matchup with Costa Rica. Caicedo remains out. Bruce’s best option is the diamond in midfield, so we’ll see if he follows through.
DEF: CAMACHO, BASSONG, WATERMAN
MID: LAPPALAINEN, CHOINIERE, WANYAMA, MIHAILOVIC, MACIEL
FWD: TOYE, TORRES
LINEUP NOTES: The wing back system long used by Montreal is something the Revs are used to. Goalkeeper Clement Diop will be out, in addition to Tabla. Kamal Miller is currently with Canada at the Gold Cup. Montreal has been on fire as of late, but they dropped their last match against NYCFC 1-0 off a bad mistake.
Sunday evening’s matchup will hold a team above the rest in the East, while the other is an Eastern Conference hopeful. Montreal is not high on many radars, but they sit in sixth, just one win out of third. All season long, they have hung around, but are just a bit too inconsistent to make it work. The Revs have won four straight against Montreal, their last lost was before COVID. New England will host CF Montreal at Gillette Stadium with kickoff scheduled for 6:00 PM EST.
