The Revs have been well represented at the 2021 Gold Cup, and Thursday night brought more examples of that. Matt Turner and the USA faced off with Qatar. Canada and Buchanan went crashing out in an excruciating loss against Mexico.

Matt Turner showed the world why he should be in the USMNT goalkeeper conversation. Turner’s two saves in the first half effectively kept them in the game. A deflected shot towards the far post of Turner’s net was saved by only using his fingertips. A second save came minutes later after a deflected shot dropped into the box, where Turner made an athletic diving save following the Qatar shot. Gyasi Zardes’ late sliding finish was the lone goal in yet another 1-0 victory for the United States, who will move onto the 2021 Gold Cup Final.

On the other hand, Buchanan went out, but not without a fight. He scored a beautiful goal down the left wing all by himself to tie the game at one apiece. His double scissor move opened up an opportunity to fire, and he finished into the bottom right. The referees got the best of Canada in the end, and the Mexicans got their 2-1 lead in minute 99, during a +7 added time.

Tajon Buchanan will return to the New England Revolution, and although it’s unlikely he plays on Sunday, he may be on the bench. Matt Turner and the United States will play their rivals in Mexico for the rights of the 2021 Gold Cup on Sunday night.
