New England Revolution Defeat New York Red Bulls, 3-2, in Comeback Fashion

The Revs went into Saturday evening’s matchup searching for a season sweep of RBNY. The previous meetings resulted in 3-1 and 3-2 victories. This one fit right in, as the Revs came out on top 3-2, yet another game of scoring a trio of goals against the Bulls.

Early in the game, Wiki Carmona unleashed a low strike into the bottom left corner. Brad Knighton reacted slow, and many believe Matt Turner would’ve made the save. The defenders didn’t close down, and they gave Carmona space for his first MLS goal.

It wasn’t long before Gustavo Bou sent another goal of the week worthy rocket into the top right corner. Last week it was against CF Montreal, this time he put it as close as he possibly could to the top right corner, where the post and crossbar meet. The goal did not last long, as they conceded to Fabio minutes later, Caden Clark had a somewhat lucky backheel flick that got over the head of undersized temporary center back AJ DeLaGarza. He was unable to deal with it, and Fabio hit a very light shot that beat Brad Knighton, who was very poorly positioned.

With a 2-1 scoreline late in the game, the Revs’ character kicked in. It was a handball in the top left corner of the field that set up a Carles Gil free kick. It came in a position slightly closer than a corner kick, and it clearly caused problems. Brandon Bye flicked his header straight past Coronel for his second headed goal of the season.

The momentum stayed with New England, as Carles Gil’s weak shot found an onside Adam Buksa inside the box in minute 91. Buksa fired with his strong left footer, and found the corner to nab all three points on the road.

This win marked the very first time New England defeated the Red Bulls at Red Bull Arena during regular season play. The Revs beat NYCFC and Montreal in the building, and beat New York there in the playoffs en route to MLS Cup 2014, but never in the regular season.

The Revs took all nine points from the Red Bulls in 2021, and look to keep this winning streak rolling. They will host Nashville SC, one of the few teams that defeated them so far this season. It will be a chance for revenge on Wednesday at 7:00 PM EST.
