The Red Sox have activated Matt Barnes off the COVID-19 related injured list, after experiencing symptoms of the virus on Tuesday. He was placed on the IL, but was activated today after testing negative. To make room for him on the roster, they’ve optioned Jonathan Arauz to the WooSox.
“Barnesy is good,” said manager Alex Cora Wednesday. “Everything went well. What we’re going to do is we’re going to option Jonathan to Triple-A. (Barnes) is here, he feels good, he’s available. We get the lead, we’ll give him the ball.”
Arauz will be sent to Worcester after another short stint with Boston, as the 23-year-old infielder is 4-for-14 (.286/.412/.357) through seven games this season with the Sox. He’s tallied three walks, one double, no homers, two runs, one RBI, and five strikeouts through his 17 plate appearances.
Barnes will return to the Red Sox, as the 31-year-old has notched a career-high 2.30 ERA this season, to go along with 23 saves through 43 outingsin his second season as closer.
