Red Sox’s Hunter Renfroe Pays Tribute to His Father in Instagram Post: ‘Cancer Was a Hard Fought Battle’

Hunter Renfroe of the Boston Red Sox was placed on the bereavement list Thursday after it was announced that a close family member had passed away.

Well, the Sox outfielder revealed in an Instagram post Saturday night that it was his father who had passed away.

“Today I buried my best friend, my dad,” said Renfroe on his Instagram post. “He fought the good fight and he won the race. Cancer was a hard fought battle for four long years, but now he is pain free and in the arms of Jesus. He now has the best seat in the house to watch me achieve all my dreams.”

Renfroe has had a career year this season with Boston, hitting .258 with an OPS of .817. He’s swatted 25 homers while grabbing 77 RBI, 71 runs, 24 doubles, 36 walks, and a career best 115 wRC+ through 115 games.

The standout year comes after hitting just .156 with the Tampa Bay Rays, hitting eight homers and an OPS of just .645 through 42 games in the shortened 2020 season.

As Hunter Renfroe mourns the loss of his father, he’ll likely return in the coming days. Red Sox manager Alex Cora did not set a timetable for his return.
