Five Red Sox Players Now Have COVID-19, Six on COVID IL; Series of Other Roster Moves Take Place

There was a chance Hirokazu Sawamura started tonight’s Rays-Red Sox.

But he tested positive for COVID-19 just hours before first pitch, forcing the newly acquired Brad Peacock, who hasn’t had a major-league outing since 2020, to start on just three days of rest.

Josh Taylor was also listed as a close contact yesterday, so he heads to the COVID-19 injured list. Him and Sawamura join Kiké Hernandez, Christian Arroyo, and Martin Perez on the list.

In other Red Sox news, Stephen Gonzalves has been called up from Triple-A Worcester. Raynel Espinal, who pitched Monday, was optioned.

Hunter Renfroe was also activated off the bereavement list.
