Records continue to be broken for the New England Revolution, who can officially be called the best regular season team in MLS history. Their 73 points is more than any other team has amassed, passing 2019 LAFC’s previous record of 72. They also will finish with the most points per game, and have won the most games ever with 22.
All of these records have been broken with still one game to go. A victory on Decision Day against Inter Miami would put the Revs at 76 points, which could be a record that holds up for a very long time. In addition, Carles Gil set the record for the most chances created for an individual player in a season.
The Revs played a stalemate with the Colorado Rapids, one of the Western Conference’s top teams, for well over an hour. But, the Rapids could not last any longer. Following about two or three penalty claims in the box, Tajon Buchanan finally was able to work his magic. He pushed in from the right side of the box, looking for an option. He decided very early in his run that he wanted to go for goal, and that’s exactly what he did. Tajon’s quickness got him past the Rapids line of defense, and he drove a low and hard shot straight past the unprepared William Yarbrough for the lone goal of the game. The Revs picked up an important clean sheet, and a 1-0 win at Gillette Stadium.
Just one match remains in the historic 2021 New England Revolution MLS regular season campaign. They will get the weekend off while the rest of the league battles for the final playoff spots, and moves closer to the 34 game total. The Revs will host Inter Miami CF next Sunday at 3:30 PM EST in their final match, where they will hoist the Supporter’s Shield.
Despite all these great things, the team knows that the job is far from done. Anything can happen in the MLS Playoffs, especially with the long break the Revolution have. They will play some closed-door scrimmages to avoid rust and stay sharp, in order to gear up for November 30th’s Eastern Conference Semi-Final.
