The Red Sox announced Sunday that they’d be exercising the $7-million option of catcher Christian Vazquez. Chris Cotillo was the first one to break the news.
While the 31-year-old did not have the greatest of seasons, the catcher did have some late-season and postseason heroics. Vazquez hit .258/.308/.352 with six homers in 2021, to go along with a 77 wRC+, eight stolen bases, and 49 RBI through 138 games. Vazquez also notched a 4.1 FRAA (fielding runs above average), which is the 21st best in the majors out of catchers.
Vazquez did have a stellar 2019, which included a 102 wRC+ and 23 long balls — he hit just 10 big flies in the four seasons prior.
