The Boston Celtics could be without two of their five starters as they take on the Detroit Pistons Wednesday night, aiming for their 10th straight win. Robert Williams and Marcus Smart are listed as doubtful vs. Detroit.
Williams is listed as doubtful for the game because of right calf tightness. This is the same injury that kept him out of last night’s big win over the 76ers. The Celtics will likely keep him out of action as the All-Star break will give him extra time to recover. Boston’s big man was listed as questionable yesterday as well before being downgraded to out.
Smart is also listed as doubtful after spraining his right ankle in the second quarter of last night’s game. The extent of Smart’s injury is unknown but it is a positive sign to see him listed as doubtful and not automatically ruled as out.
However, don’t expect to see Smart suit up as the Celtics will likely take their time bringing him back. Smart was listed as questionable along with Williams last night (non-COVID illness, not related to tonight’s status).
“Rolled his ankle pretty bad,” coach Ime Udoka said. “Stepped on Joel (Embiid’s) foot on the way up. Limping noticeably. We’ll check him out tonight, obviously, tomorrow, see how he feels. Didn’t look very good walking out, but we’ll see.”
The Celtics will tip-off against the Pistons at 7:30 p.m. EST tonight in their last game before the All-Star break.
