After being the hero of one Super Bowl and being benched for the next, Malcolm Butler is back — with Leonard Fournette. The New England Patriots are hosting the two for a free agent workout, according to Ben Volin (Butler) and Field Yates (Fournette).
Butler, 32, retired before the 2021 season but is coming out of retirement. The former undrafted free agent signing burst onto the scene in 2014 with his game-winning interception in the Super Bowl XLIX, where he picked off Russell Wilson at the goal line.
The cornerback had another solid three seasons with the Patriots, earning a Pro Bowl selection in 2015 as well, though he was benched for Super Bowl LI — before spending an unsuccessful three seasons with the Titans.
Fournette, 26, has spent the past two seasons with the Buccaneers, winning the Super Bowl with Tom Brady and Tampa Bay in 2020. The five-year back spent three seasons with the Jaguars, posting a 1000-yard season in 2019, though he hasn’t been able to match that season in Tampa Bay. Fournette rushed for just over 800 yards this past season across 14 games, also notching 454 yards through the air.
