The Boston Red Sox have ran into more COVID trouble, as after Kevin Plawecki was placed on the COVID-19 related injured list yesterday the Sox have placed Christian Vazquez and Jonathan Arauz on it. The team also recalled right-handed reliever Tyler Danish and selected outfielder/first baseman Rob Refsnyder from Triple-A Worcester.

Along with Plawecki, two other staff members tested positive.

Refsnyder, 31, has had an impressive start to his season with the WooSox, hitting .400/.551/.600 with eight RBI, four doubles, a homer, and a .212 wRC+ in 11 games. The righty-righty minor league signing just barely missed the cut for the Opening Day roster, though he’ll get his shot with the Red Sox after hitting .245 with two homers and an 86 wRC+ across 51 games with the Twins last season.

Danish, 27, was also in the running for a roster spot on Opening Day. In three relief outings for Worcester this season, all one inning, he’s let up a pair of hits and walks though not letting one come across to score and while also punching out six.

It’s a little confusing though with one catcher, that being Connor Wong who was promoted after Plawecki headed to the COVID IL. Chris Cotillo reported yesterday that Ronaldo Hernandez, involved in the return of the Chris Mazza-Jeffrey Springs package before the 2021 season, is getting called up. Pete Abraham of The Boston Globe reports that he’s also currently in the clubhouse.

Alex Cora says Rich Hill is heading to the bereavement list and Hernandez will take his spot on the roster.

Hill pitched Monday despite the loss of his father Friday.
