Toronto Blue Jays 6, Boston Red Sox 1: Nick Pivetta Labors Through 4, J.D. Martinez Leaves Early in Sleepy Night at Fenway

Boston Red Sox

The Boston Red Sox fell to the Toronto Blue Jays 6-1 in a sleepy night at Fenway Park Wednesday. J.D. Martinez left early while Nick Pivetta labored through four innings as the Jays take control of the AL East, as the Sox fell to 6-6.

Pivetta allowed five runs on seven hits and four walks, with all five stemming from a five-run second. Raimel Tapia began the rally with a two-run bomb which was followed up with a pair of walks and a single to load the bases. A sac fly from George Springer made it 3-1 before Bo Bichette opened the floodgates with a two-run single.

The right-hander was able to hold Toronto scoreless in the third and fourth though to finish his day with four frames tossed, putting his ERA at 10.03 on the season while he added his third loss to move to 0-3.

The bullpen only let up just one run, as Phillips Valdez continued his scoreless season with a scoreless fifth and sixth only yielding one hit, and Matt Barnes gave up a run on a sac fly in inning No. 7. Danish tossed a scoreless eighth and ninth in his first big-league outing since 2018, allowing just one walk on no hits while striking out five.

Martinez, before his injury, had the only RBI of the night for the Sox as he singled home Rafael Devers, who doubled, in the first. That was Boston’s only source of runs as they scored just one run despite 10 hits, slating a 1-for-14 mark with runners in scoring position

Martinez leaves, Story takes fastball off the head

After doubling to lead off the third inning, Martinez came out of the game though Trevor Story was a bit more fortunate. Story took a 93-mile-per-hour fastball off the head in the third inning off Jose Berrios but stayed in the game.

For Martinez, it was left adductor tightness, and Arroyo toook over at designated hitter. Luckily for Story, it hit off the helmet that he threw off immediately. The training staff came out, but he stayed in.
