Garrett Whitlock makes his second career MLB start while Xander Bogaerts and J.D. Martinez are out as the Boston Red Sox take on the Toronto Blue Jays Thursday afternoon in the series finale. Boston will try and even up the series while Toronto will try and give the Sox their seventh loss in nine games at 3:07 p.m. ET.
Following Boston’s 7-1 win last night over Toronto which snapped a four-game skid, Alex Cora mentioned that Bogaerts would receive a day off while Martinez will receive a day of rest as well just three days after coming back from a four-game adductor injury. Christian Arroyo will play shortstop for Bogaerts while Travis Shaw will be the designated hitter.
Bogaerts, after a 2-for-20 start to his year, is now leading the American League in batting average (.397), adding four hits to his campaign last night.
Whitlock remains in the rotation and will face fellow right-hander in Jays’ Alex Manoah. Trevor Story still remains in the leadoff spot while Kiké Hernandez moves to the cleanup spot, and Alex Verdugo stays in the two-hole. Jackie Bradley Jr. hits sixth behind Hernandez.
