Red Sox Make Eight Roster Moves Ahead of Weekend Series in Baltimore

Red Sox

The Boston Red Sox made eight roster moves ahead of their three-game weekend series against the Baltimore Orioles as the team brought back Tanner Houck and Kutter Crawford from the restricted list, recalled Franchy Cordero while Travis Shaw was designated for assignment. They recalled the newly claimed Jaylin Davis from Worcester while Tyler Danish, Rob Refsnyder, and John Schreiber were all sent back to Worcester.

The recently claimed (from the Giants) Davis started off strong in Triple-A hitting .295/.340/.500 with two homers and seven RBI across 10 games though had just one hit through five games with the Giants (.111) and was designated for assignment. The 27-year-old was a 24th-round pick in 2015 by the Twins and spent time with Minnesota until being acquired by San Francisco in 2019. Boston originally optioned him to the WooSox but recalled him today.

Unvaccinated righties Houck and Crawford spent four days on the restricted list during the team’s four-game set in Toronto, which prompted the callups of Refsnyder and Schreiber. Danish has been up and down over the past week after COVID tests and Rich Hill’s bereavement list stint.

Shaw beat out Cordero in spring training for a bench bat roster spot after signing a minor-league deal with the team over the offseason, but through 19 plate appearances, he did not reach base once. The infielder, who recently just turned 32, rejoined the Sox last season and had a  stint after being DFA’d by the Brewers.

Cordero, 27, has had an impressive start to his season with the WooSox, hitting .296/.378/.535 with three homers, 24 RBI, and a 142 wRC+ in 19 games.

  • Jonathan Arauz will soon head to Worcester for rehab
  • Rich Hill, Nathan Eovaldi, and Nick Pivetta will be the rotation this weekend; no Houck, meaning he could have a bullpen role and Garrett Whitlock could stay in the rotation
